Best Applesauce Substitute

Applesauce is a sauce made with peeled or unpeeled apples that is either sweetened or spiced and is widely used in North America and European countries. Apple butter is another type of applesauce that contains heavy amounts of sugar to preserve its shelf life. There are more products made with applesauce. Because of its popularity, ready-made products can be seen in supermarkets and online shops.

The practical use of applesauce is commonly seen as a side dish to complement meat dishes, as well as a partner for potato pancakes in some European countries. While applesauce is primarily used as a side dish, it’s also an important ingredient for several dessert recipes. From cakes, muffins to other forms of pastry, it’s understandable why it’s a common recipe nowadays.

If a certain recipe calls for applesauce and there’s none available at the moment, there are some substitutes that can compensate for the missing flavor.

Applesauce Substitutes

Mashed bananas can work similarly to applesauce, especially when done right. The general rule of substituting banana is to use double the amount of it when the recipe calls for half a cup of applesauce. While it may not have the same consistency and tanginess, it can still get the job done.

Fruit and Berry Purees

Another wonderful alternative is the use of fruits and berry purees. A combination of different fruits can give your sauce the sweet, tangy, and rich flavor that can usually be accomplished by applesauce. Use similarly with banana purees when it comes to the proper ratio.

Pumpkin Puree

Considered as the best substitute for applesauce, pumpkin puree is a very common product found in supermarkets. The only drawback of using this puree is that it usually takes longer to be cooked, especially when used for baking goods.
