Best Heavy Cream Substitute

Here are some suggestions that will lend the same consistency as heavy cream with only minimally altering the flavors.

Heavy Cream Substitute · Milk and Butter Adding butter to milk provides similar fat content to that of heavy cream. To do this, add 1 part of melted butter to 3 parts of milk. You may also want to add a few tablespoons of flour until you get the desired consistency. This works as a substitute for heavy cream to add flavor and creaminess to a dish. For a vegan version, use the same proportion of olive oil to melted butter and soy milk to regular milk.

· Half and Half This is also a good substitute for heavy cream, especially if whipping is required. Since it does not exactly share the same fat content of the heavy cream, however, the finished product may not be as stable.

· Greek Yogurt and Milk If you’re conscious about the fat content, you may substitute using Greek yogurt and milk. Simply combine equal parts of yogurt and milk, and mix them well. Should you find the mixture too thick, simply add a bit more milk. This is great to thicken up sauces and soups.

· Evaporated Milk This is a great stand-in for heavy cream in baked goods. Evaporated milk contains 60% less water than regular milk, which makes it much closer in consistency and creaminess to heavy cream. To use in place of heavy cream, simply put the same amount of evaporated milk to the recipe.

· Milk and Cornstarch Use milk and cornstarch to replace heavy cream in sauce and soup, but be aware that it may alter the final texture in baked goods. Add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch to a cup of milk and mix thoroughly. Make sure to keep the mixture smooth and free from lumps before using in baked recipes. This low-calorie and low-fat substitute works great for diet recipes.
