Best Kosher Salt Substitutes

Kosher salt is a raw, coarse, and flaky type of salt that is primarily known for its texture, taste, and lack of additives like caking agents and iodine. In the Jewish kosher tradition, koshering meat with salt is a process of draining all the blood in fresh produce. Nowadays, this household commodity is a very affordable and common option for adding flavor to a variety of dishes.

Also known as rock salt, flake salt, and cooking salt in other parts of the world, kosher salt is mostly used for cooking and brining in the culinary industry due to each crystal’s tougher and larger texture compared to table salt, as well as not leaving an unpleasant or unusual taste to dishes when compared to other types of salt with the same characteristics.

While kosher salt is considered to be the purest form of salt, there are other substitutes for recipes that call for one:

Kosher Salt Substitutes

Sea Salt

Sea salt is the most unrefined type of salt. It has similar characteristics of kosher salt but is smaller and its texture can vary from smooth to coarse. There are plenty of varieties of sea salt found around the world, and they vary by color, flavor, nutrients, and minerals. While a little more costly than kosher, the added nutrients and minerals can influence the taste of dishes.

Himalayan Pink Salt

Himalayan pink salt is considered to be a finishing salt due to its color and appeal, but it has a very similar flavor profile with kosher salt. The biggest difference with Himalayan salts, other than its color, is that it contains iron oxide as well as other trace amounts of minerals which can affect the taste of some of the dishes.

Pickling Salt

While pickling salt doesn’t have the coarse and dry texture found in kosher salt, this can be a perfect substitute for recipes in need of kosher salt as it doesn’t contain the additives of table salt. Since the grains are smaller, measurements must be adjusted carefully as they do not share the same ratio. As a general rule, if a recipe calls for 1 cup of kosher, use half a cup of pickling salt.
