Whipping cream is a common ingredient for baking or making desserts. Also known as heavy cream, this ingredient is commonly used for making pies, cake toppings, trifles, mousse, and cupcake frostings, among other things. But what if you run out of whipping cream in your pantry? Try these options for whipping cream substitute for any recipes that might need one.
Milk and Butter
The combination of milk and butter is a foolproof formula for making a heavy cream substitute for most recipes. The butter provides fat content to the milk, which helps to achieve the same consistency as heavy cream. You need to melt ¼ cup of butter and mix it with ¾ cup of milk. You can also thicken the mixture with 1 tablespoon of flour, although you don’t always need that.
Do take note that this mixture is a good substitute when you use whipping cream for baking and cooking. It will infuse the same flavor and creaminess that heavy cream brings to a recipe. However, it won’t whip as well.
Milk and Cornstarch
Another substitute for whipping cream is to combine milk with the cornstarch. Cornstarch serves as the thickening agent for this mixture so it has the same texture as heavy cream. To produce the equivalent of a cup of heavy cream, you need 2 tablespoons of cornstarch combined with a cup of milk. Stir the two ingredients well to create a thick liquid mixture. You can use either skim or whole milk for this.
This substitute is great for cooking but it can alter the texture of your baked goods.
Butter and Haf-and-Haf
This is another simple substitute for whipping cream if you ever run out in your pantry. Haf-and-Haf is made with cream and whole milk. It consists of a third of the amount of fat content found in heavy cream. The addition of butter boosts the fat percentage of the mixture so it is as close to the texture of whipping cream.
In some recipes, though, you can simply use haf-and-haf as an alternative to whipping creams such as when making soups and sauces. In this case, you won’t need to add butter.
